I’m of the mindset that musical artists have a responsibility to maintain some level of separation from other musical artists. I mean, it’s ok to do a mash up or feature another artist on a song or two, but when that influence changes the landscape of one artist’s music forever? A fan has to draw the line somewhere. If I could remove any musician from history, chances are it would be Neil Young. While I know many people think he is a musical genius, I’m not one of them. To me, he is a lot more like Corky from Life Goes On with more hair and a guitar.
A long time ago, in a land far away, I discovered a rock band that was quite possibly the last great rock & roll show. They had the perfect blend of musical ability, showmanship, and social consciousness. These are the very things that turn rock stars into rock gods. Short of having some kind of urban legend attached to your name like David Bowie and Mick Jagger, it is musical genius that can set you apart from your contemporaries.
There was a time, perhaps 10 years ago, that Madonna was relevant. While anyone with half a brain has since stopped paying attention to that rancid bag of wind, for some reason she continues to fight tooth and nail against the ravages of time and fame.
I don’t think I am in the minority believing that Madogna’s best years are way behind her. Everytime I see her these days, the more I understand why old people frighten children. I still have nightmares from the 3 seconds I saw of her sporting a leotard. Isn’t there a rule against octogenarians wearing spandex? Shouldn’t there be? Amirite? What’s worse, I am hard-pressed to discern the difference between Madonna and Keith Richards… I am beginning to think they are the same person… why don’t you ever see them both at the same time?
I honestly wish that some of the biggest fame whores like Madonna would simply disappear. I know there are still a few people who still believe there is something worthwhile about her or her music, but I just don’t understand it. If someone asked me twenty years ago whether or not we’d be listening to a new album from Madonna in 2008, I would have laughed in their face… then punched them for putting the thought into my head.
I think Madonna is much like Liza Minnelli (and judy garland before her)… a gay icon whose sole worth is giving the transgender/transvestite peformers someone to emulate well into their sixties and seventies.

Few songs have meant as much to me as the 1988 Jane’s Addiction anthem, Jane Says. Apparently I am not the only one who likes that song. In fact, in the first six months of 2001, it was broadcast more than 12,000 times, according to Mediabase, a company that monitors radio airplay. Despite being almost 20 years old, to this day Jane Says is apparently irresistible to anyone flipping through stations.
I can’t be sure, but I think the main reason why “Jane Says” has enjoyed such durability has more to do with when it was released than with the song itself. The late ’80s saw a great deal of pop-oriented rock released by such bands as Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and Guns N’ Roses. Clearly, the music produced by those bands has its own level of durability, but not in the same way “Jane Says” does. For those bands, there is a campy cachet to their music, but “Jane Says” is much more and resonates to this day.
